“Where the hell have you been?” Charles asked accusingly, crossing his arms across his chest.
Virgil looked at him and raised his eyebrow. “I would’ve been here this whole time, but right after the accident, I had a phone call that my mother was dying due to,” and here he paused and glanced down at his feet, looking like he was really trying to reign in his grief and other catastrophic emotions, “due to a brain tumour that she’s been fighting and a couple other extremely urgent family emergencies and I’ve only just been able to get here.”
Charles had his eyes narrowed the entire time, searching Virgil for any signs that he had been lying.
But it seemed that Virgil was telling the truth.
Which Charles was kinda disappointed about.
“I’m truly sorry, Virgil,” Lily said, going over to Virgil and resting her hand on his shoulder, which caused said man to give her a grateful look. Lily smiled at him and then turned her eyes towards Charles and glared fire and daggers into his soul.
If looks could kill…
“Follow. Me,” she said through gritted teeth.
Charles nodded and waited until Lily had detached herself from Mia’s boyfriend and had started walking down the hall away from Virgil and the doctor before following after her, shooting Virgil an apologetic look, which Virgil just ignored and proceeded to go over to the doctor and start talking, though about what, Charles didn’t know cause Lily was furiously waiting for him.
He had never seen anyone this furious since he had broken up with Mia.
“Yes?” he asked hesitantly, every inch of him scared of what she was about to say to him, but hiding it pretty well.
“What are you doing?!?”
“Don’t act dumb! Why are you talking to Virgil like that?! Acting like you’re accusing of him running off or something!”
Charles sighed and pinched his nose. “Cause I genuinely thought-“
“Not every guy is an asshole like you! Not every guy is going to run off and leave the girl in a lurch while going off with the next young and pretty Barbie doll out there!” Lily shouted. Charles glared and was about to give a stinging retort, but then fell silent as Lily continued her rant, not giving him time to respond. “He doesn’t need you acting all holier-than-thou! None of us need that! You have no right to talk to him like that, especially after the crap you pulled on Mia! Virgil had an extremely legitimate reason for disappearing like that and he’s still here for Mia – which is way more than I can say for you, isn’t it?”
“I’m here now,” Charles muttered quietly.
“But you weren’t there for her all those years ago, were you? And the only reason you’re here now is probably to get in her pants, screw her over and then ditch her again – I’m not blind. So do us all a favour and fuck off!”
“Lily?” Charles turned to see who was calling Lily and saw Virgil motioning her over.
“Yeah, I’m coming,” Lily seethed before starting to head over to Virgil and the doctor. Before she left, she turned to Charles and said: “Just. Leave.”
